Ammonia Leak Detection and Plant Safety for Engine Rooms

Why NH₃ leak detection, PPE-led field work, and air-purger health belong in the same reliability plan as compressor overhauls.

Ammonia is an efficient natural refrigerant with zero ozone-depletion potential, but it is toxic at modest concentrations. High-capacity plants in cold storage and food processing need detection, ventilation, and trained response — not only a fast compressor mechanic.

Fixed leak detectors should cover the compressor room, valve stations, and occupied spaces downstream of evaporators. Calibrate sensors on a documented interval. A detector that has never been bump-tested is a false sense of safety. Tie alarms into the SCADA or HMI so the night operator sees concentration, zone, and time-stamp without walking the plant.

Most persistent “small leaks” are packing glands, unused purge points, or a tired air purger dumping refrigerant with non-condensables. Repairing the purger often cuts ammonia loss more than tightening every flange. During overhauls, replace gaskets and inspect welded joints that have seen vibration from a misaligned drive.

Field work requires PPE: chemical-rated gloves, goggles or face shield, and respiratory protection matched to the task. Laser alignment and pipeline work on a live plant are not the same job as a workshop strip. AmmoniaEquip treats safety audits as part of commissioning, not an optional extra.

If you are planning a Grasso RC-11, RC-12, V-series, or screw-package overhaul, include leak detection and purger health in the same scope. Zero unplanned downtime is easier when the plant is both mechanically sound and measurably leak-tight.
