What actually failed
Start at the room, not the nameplate. If one evaporator is iced and others are dry, the compressor may be healthy. If discharge pressure is high and the condenser is dirty or the fans are down, a “weak compressor” story is often airflow. If oil is dark or the shaft seal weeps, then the machine is in the conversation.
Industrial NH₃ chillers also lose capacity when the air purger dumps refrigerant with non-condensables, or when a capacity slide hunts. We log suction, discharge, oil pressure, and slide position before we quote a rebuild.
- Room temperature drift with compressors already at 100%
- High discharge pressure or frequent high-pressure trips
- Ammonia smell at glands, unused purge points, or the purger stack
- Controls that will not unload, or a SCADA alarm no one has cleared
